What are cube tuck boxes?
Cube tuck boxes are folding cartons whose length, width and height are the same, or very nearly. Because a cube can land on any face, every panel is usually printed. The standard closure is a reverse tuck, and the blanks come to you flat.
They suit square items, tea and gifts. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

Why choose a cube carton?
A cube stands out on a shelf full of tall, thin boxes. It sits squarely, stacks into neat towers and feels like a gift even when the product inside is small.
The sage and cream sample in our photos shows a cube printed with a leaf pattern on every side and a label panel on the front. The black and brown pair carry bold lettering that wraps from one face to the next.
- Tea blenders boxing a pouch of loose leaf
- Bakers and confectioners with single treats or small biscuit stacks
- Candle makers with votives and mini jars
- Gift shops packing trinkets, keyrings and small ornaments
- Wedding and party suppliers making favour boxes
Why is a reverse tuck the default on cubes?
With a reverse tuck end, the lid flap slips in on one face and the base flap on the opposite face. On a cube this spreads the folds round the box, so no single side carries all the creases.
The tea cube in our photos shows the top tuck closing from the back, leaving the front label panel untouched. That is the side a shopper sees first, so it pays to keep it free of flaps and slits.
Our page on reverse tuck end carton construction goes through the fold order flap by flap.
Does a cube box have to be a perfect cube?
No. A box that is 80 × 80 × 85 mm still looks like a cube from a few feet away. A few millimetres of extra height is fine and often useful.
What matters is that the footprint is square. If the length and width differ by more than about 10 mm, the box starts to read as a small rectangular carton instead.
Size the box to the item first, then decide whether to round the sides up to match. A set of three cubes in stepped sizes, say 60, 80 and 100 mm, makes a strong gift range on one shelf.
What size cube box fits my product?
Find the largest of the three measurements of your item. That number, plus 3 to 4 mm of clearance, is a sensible inside size for all three sides.
Soft items such as tea pouches can be gently squared up, so measure them filled and lying flat. Rigid items such as a votive in glass need the full clearance so the tuck closes without pressing.
If you are packing two or more things together, lay them out as they will sit and measure the group. Our tuck box measuring guide with clearances has worked examples.
Can a cube carton have a window in the lid?
Yes. The dark pair in our photos have a round window cut into the top panel, so you can look straight down at what is inside. It works well for baked goods, sweets and anything with an appealing top.
You can have the hole bare, or glued behind with a clear sheet. Film keeps out dust and crumbs; an open hole suits dry items and gives a cleaner edge.
Keep the window well clear of the tuck flap. The flap needs a solid strip of board to slide into the box.
| Window option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Round lid window, open | Biscuits, sweets, soaps | Dust settling inside on a shelf |
| Round lid window, filmed | Treats, tea, small gifts | Glare under strong shop lights |
| Front panel window | Items with a good side view | Less room for the label |
| No window | Gifts, surprises, tea pouches | Shoppers cannot see the item |
How should artwork wrap around six faces?
A cube has no obvious back, so plan the design as one continuous strip around the four sides, with the top and bottom treated as separate panels.
Bold patterns and large lettering that run over the corners, like the black and brown pair, turn the carton into a piece of display. Small, centred logos on each face look more formal.
Put legal text, weights and barcodes on the base or on one side. That keeps the main faces clean. If the cube will be shown in a stack, check which faces stay visible and put the brand name on those.
Which board and finishes suit cube boxes?
White SBS at 350gsm is what most cubes go out on; brown kraft and other stocks are there if you ask. A small cube on standard board keeps its square shape well because the panels are short.
Soft touch lamination gives a cube a velvety feel that buyers like to turn in their hands. Gold foil on a logo, embossing on a pattern and spot UV on lettering are all available as options.
Kraft suits tea and bakery cubes, though pale colours fade on brown, so check the proof closely. For a cube that will be handled a lot at a till, matt lamination keeps the edges from scuffing white.
How do cube boxes pack and post?
Cubes are easy to pack in quantity. They fill an outer shipper in tidy rows with almost no gaps, and they stack without sliding.
The cartons arrive flat with the side seam glued, so a stack of several hundred takes little room in a stockroom. Fold them as you fill them.
For single cubes posted to customers, a snug mailer or padded bag around the carton protects the corners, which are the first thing to dent. Tissue or a card insert stops a small item rattling round inside a cube with spare room.
What goes wrong when people order cube cartons?
Most issues come down to sizing and artwork placement. A cube makes errors easy to spot because every face is on show.
- Sizing to the item's height only, so the footprint is too tight
- Putting the main logo on the face that becomes the base when the box is stacked
- Running fine text over a corner fold, where it can crack or split
- Cutting a lid window that eats into the tuck flap

Cube Tuck Boxes: questions
Can a cube tuck box be slightly taller than it is wide?
Yes. A few millimetres of extra height still reads as a cube and gives room for a lid or bow.
Is the round window on top of a cube cut to any size?
Yes, within reason. We leave enough board around it for the lid to stay square and for the tuck flap to grip.
Can every face of a cube box be printed differently?
Yes. All six faces can carry different artwork, and the proof shows how each one lines up at the corners.
Do cube cartons stack well on a shop counter?
Yes. Square faces stack into stable towers, which is why cubes are popular for counter displays. Keep the heaviest items at the bottom of the pile.
Is a cube box a good choice for tea?
Yes, especially for loose leaf in a pouch. The square shape gives a large label face and stands out from tall tea cartons.
Can cube boxes be made in kraft board?
They can. Brown kraft cubes look right for tea, bakery and handmade gifts, and dark inks read best on that surface.
Will the film on a lid window scratch?
Clear film can pick up light marks in handling. If that matters, an open window or a smaller cut-out is the alternative.
How small can a cube tuck box be?
We have made cubes for single sweets and tiny trinkets. Send the item size and the proof confirms what works.
Can I order cubes in two or three sizes with matching artwork?
Yes. Each size gets its own dieline, and the artwork is scaled so the set matches.
Should I choose a reverse tuck or a crash lock base for a cube?
A reverse tuck suits most light items. A crash lock base is quicker to pack and can be quoted on any cube.
Can a cube carton hold two items side by side?
Yes, with a card divider insert on request. Measure the pair together as they will sit.
Are cube boxes good as wedding favours?
They are a popular choice. You can find other gift shapes in our full range of tuck end box styles.
