What are playing card boxes?

Playing card boxes are small printed cartons sized to one deck of cards. The usual closure is a tuck top, a hinged lid with a tuck flap and dust flaps, plus a half-moon thumb notch on the front. They arrive flat and fold by hand around the deck.

They suit card decks and card games. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

What makes a good playing card box?

A card box has one job: hold the deck tightly and let it out easily. Too loose and the cards fan out inside. Too tight and the box splits at the corners.

Our six sample photos show the classic look. There are dark navy and black boxes with gold detail, a red box with a white border, a yellow and black deck, and two maroon boxes with a patterned back design.

Every one of them is cut close to its deck, which is what makes a card box feel right in the hand.

Who orders custom card tuck boxes?

Designers often need a box early for photos and a crowdfunding page, before the full run is made.

  • Card game designers printing a first run
  • Tarot and oracle deck creators
  • Magicians and cardists who want their own deck
  • Pubs, clubs and venues giving branded decks as gifts
  • Companies ordering decks for events and trade shows

A first card game run is often small, and quantities are quoted per order.

How does the tuck lid on a card box work?

The lid hinges along the back of the box. A tuck flap on the lid slides in behind the front panel, and two dust flaps fold in at the sides.

On the front, a half-moon thumb notch is cut into the top edge. You press the deck through the notch and the cards slide up and out.

Some decks use an end tuck instead, with the flap on the narrow end. Both closures can be quoted, and our guide to straight, reverse and auto bottom styles compares them.

The dust flaps stop cards slipping out of the sides when the box is carried in a pocket.

What size box fits a standard deck of playing cards?

A poker size card is about 63 × 88 mm, and a 54-card deck is about 18 to 19 mm thick. A box near 65 × 90 × 20 mm fits it closely.

Card stock thickness changes the deck depth a lot. Stack your actual cards, press them gently, and measure.

The table shows common formats. Send your card size and count and we cut to your deck.

Mini and tarot decks follow the same method.

FormatCard sizeSuggested inside size
PokerAbout 63 × 88 mmabout 65 × 90 × 20 mm
BridgeAbout 57 × 89 mmabout 59 × 90 × 20 mm
TarotAbout 70 × 120 mmabout 72 × 122 × 30 mm
MiniAbout 44 × 64 mmabout 46 × 66 × 18 mm

How tight should a card box be?

Allow about 1 to 2 mm on the width and height, and about 1 mm on the depth. That holds the cards without forcing them.

Sleeved cards and decks with extra rules cards need more depth. Count everything that goes in, including a jokers card and a rules sheet.

If the deck has gilded or foiled edges, add a fraction more clearance so the edges do not scuff.

Board, print and finishes for card boxes

Deck boxes are made from 350gsm white SBS, and kraft or other boards can be quoted on request. White board gives the strongest colour for full-bleed card back designs.

Gold foil on a dark box, like the navy and black samples, is a classic look for a premium deck. Embossing the suit symbols or the title adds a feel to match.

Spot UV on the title, gloss lamination for bright game boxes and soft touch for tarot are all options. Our foil tuck boxes page shows foil on several boxes.

Black boxes print best with a rich black built from several inks, which our designers set up on the artwork.

What should go on each panel of a card box?

The front carries the title and main art. Many designers repeat the card back on the reverse of the box, as on the maroon sample.

Side panels are narrow, about 20 mm on a poker deck. Use them for the title running vertically and the number of cards.

Keep text clear of the thumb notch on the front. Our designers mark the notch on the proof so nothing is cut through.

The top flap shows when the box lies in a drawer, so a small logo there helps.

Can a card game box hold more than cards?

Card games often include tokens, dice or a rules booklet as well as cards. A deeper box with a card divider keeps the cards on one side and the extras on the other.

Measure the stacked deck and each extra item, then add them together for the depth. A rules booklet folded to card size can sit on top of the deck.

For bigger games, a larger outer with several separately boxed decks inside is often neater.

Send a photo of everything laid out on a table, and we suggest a box size and divider position.

How do card boxes ship to backers or customers?

A boxed deck fits a padded envelope, and the box keeps the cards square in transit. Board games with several decks can use one larger outer with each deck boxed inside.

The boxes arrive flat and fold around the deck by hand. Fold the box first, slide the deck in, then tuck the lid.

Some sellers shrink-wrap each boxed deck themselves before sale, and the box keeps its shape under the wrap.

What goes wrong with card boxes?

Card boxes are small and tight, so errors show quickly.

We check each of these on the proof before anything is printed, so you can fix them at no cost.

  • Measuring card size from the printer's spec rather than the cut cards
  • Leaving the jokers, advert or rules cards out of the deck count
  • Placing text where the thumb notch cuts the front panel
  • A box so tight that the corners split when the deck goes in
  • Gloss lamination on a dark box that is handled a lot

Playing Card Boxes: questions

What size box fits a poker deck?

A box about 65 × 90 × 20 mm fits a standard 54-card poker deck. Measure your own deck, as card stock changes the depth.

Can a card box fit sleeved cards?

Yes, but sleeves add width and depth. Measure a sleeved stack and we size the box to it.

Do playing card boxes have a thumb notch?

Yes. A half-moon thumb notch on the front is standard, so the deck slides out easily.

Can you make tarot deck boxes?

Yes. Tarot decks are larger and thicker, so the box is usually about 72 × 122 × 30 mm. We cut to your exact deck.

Can the inside of a card box be printed?

Yes. Inside printing is available on request and suits a short message or rules summary.

Is a tuck lid or an end tuck better for cards?

A tuck lid opens from the top with a thumb notch, and an end tuck opens from the narrow end. Both are quoted on request.

Can a card box hold two decks?

Yes. A double deck box is wider, with a card divider between the decks if you want one.

Can I foil the title on a playing card box?

Yes. Gold, silver or holographic foil on the title is an option, as is embossing.

Do card game designers need a large order?

No. Quantities are quoted per order, so a first run can be priced to the number you need.

How much clearance does a card box need?

About 1 to 2 mm on the width and height and about 1 mm on the depth. More and the cards move.

Can the card box match my card back design?

Yes. Send your card back art and we place it on the box panels. Our guide to measuring a tuck box helps with the deck size.

How long until my playing card boxes arrive?

Making takes 4–6 business days after proof approval, then free tracked UK delivery takes 2–3 business days.
