What are book tuck end boxes?

Book tuck end boxes are flat, wide cartons with a lid joined along one long edge. The lid closes over the tray and a front tuck slides inside the front wall, much like closing a book. The blanks come flat and are folded by hand.

They suit books, diaries and flat goods. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

What is a book tuck end box?

It is a carton built around the way a book opens. The box is shallow and wide, the lid is joined along one long side, and it swings open in a single movement.

A tuck flap on the front edge of the lid slides down inside the front wall to close it. Small dust flaps at each end of the lid fold in underneath to keep the corners neat.

It is a close relative of the standard tuck top box with a hinged lid. The difference is the shape: book tuck cartons are much flatter and open along the long edge.

What do the four photos show?

The orange carton is open, with an olive inside that contrasts with the bright outside. You can see the lid hinged on the back edge and the front tuck standing up.

The pale blue pair shows one carton open and one closed and stood on its edge. Closed, it looks like a book on a shelf.

The two kraft photos show a closed box with small locking slots on the sides, and a shallow tray resting on a flat box. All four are sample designs.

Who uses book-style tuck cartons?

Anyone with a flat product that should be opened slowly and seen at once. The wide lid reveals the whole product in one go.

  • Notebook, diary and planner makers
  • Small publishers boxing a special edition
  • Sock and accessory brands sending a folded pair
  • Illustrators selling print sets and card packs
  • Gift shops boxing flat items such as scarves or tea towels

How does the book lid stay closed?

Three things work together. The front tuck slides inside the front wall and is held by friction. The dust flaps at each end of the lid sit inside the side walls. On some designs, small tabs on the lid lock into slots in the walls, as the closed kraft box in our photos shows.

Side walls are usually folded double. That gives a neater top edge and a stiffer wall for the tuck to press against.

If the box will be opened often, ask for a thumb notch on the front wall. It gives the customer a place to lift the lid.

What size book tuck box do I need for an A5 notebook?

An A5 notebook measures 210 × 148 mm. Add 5 mm to each of those so the book drops in and lifts out easily, which gives about 215 × 153 mm. Rounding up to 220 × 155 mm leaves room for a ribbon or a band.

For the depth, measure the closed notebook and add 3 to 5 mm. A 20 mm notebook suits a 25 mm deep box; a thick planner may need 30 mm or more.

The guide to measuring a tuck box for clearance covers depth in more detail.

Board and print for book tuck boxes

Our default board here is 350gsm white SBS. Kraft, or something else, can be requested. Kraft gives the natural brown look in two of our photos; white SBS gives brighter colour.

A book box has two big print areas: the outside of the lid and the inside. Many brands put a bold design on top. A few words printed under the lid then greet the customer as it opens.

Our notes on choosing board for a tuck box compare the look and feel of each board.

Which finishes suit a book-style lid?

The lid is a large flat panel, so finishes have room to work. A foil title across the middle reads like a book cover. Embossing a pattern or a crest adds texture.

Soft touch lamination feels good under the hand and suits a box that is opened slowly. Spot UV on a single motif gives a subtle shine against a matt background.

All of these are options and appear on your quote as separate lines.

How do book tuck boxes pack and post?

Each one comes to you as a flat blank. Fold in the double side walls, tuck the end flaps, lay in the product and close the lid with the front tuck.

A flat carton like this stacks well, which makes storage simple on a shelf or in a drawer. Keep the flat blanks under something level until you fold them, so the long lid panel stays true.

For posting to customers, slip the box into a mailer or a stiff envelope. The printed carton is what they open; the outer layer takes the bumps on the way.

Which mistakes are easy to make?

Book boxes are simple, but a few slips come up again and again. Each one is cheap to fix on a proof and costly to fix after printing.

  • Sizing to the paper size and forgetting the book's cover overhang
  • Making the box too deep, so the product slides about
  • Printing the inside message upside down relative to how the lid opens
  • Putting key text on the folded side walls, where it is split by a fold
  • Choosing a deep, narrow product for a book box when a tuck top suits it better

How do I order book tuck end boxes?

Book Tuck End Boxes: questions

Why is it called a book tuck end box?

Because the lid is hinged along the long edge and opens like the cover of a book, with a tuck flap at the front.

Is a book tuck box the same as a tuck top box?

They close the same way, with a hinged lid and front tuck. A book tuck box is shallower and wider, and opens along its long edge.

Can a book tuck box hold an A4 print set?

Yes. An A4 print set usually suits an inside size of about 305 × 215 mm. The number of prints sets the depth.

Can the inside of the lid be printed?

Yes, inside print is available on request. Many brands put a short note or pattern there.

Are the side walls of a book tuck box double?

Usually, yes. Folding the walls double gives a neat top edge and a stiffer surface for the lid tuck.

Can I add a ribbon or band to a book tuck box?

We do not supply ribbons, but we can size the box with room for one. Tell us when you ask for a quote.

Do book tuck boxes lie flat on a shelf?

Yes. Closed, they stack neatly or stand on edge like a book.

Can I order a book tuck box in kraft?

Yes. Kraft is available on request and gives the natural brown look shown in two of our photos.

Can a book tuck box have a window in the lid?

Yes. We can cut a window in the lid, filmed or open, so the cover of the product shows through.

Will a book tuck box fit through a letterbox?

That depends on the size and depth you choose, so we do not promise it. Tell us your target depth and we size to it.

Can I have locking tabs on the lid?

Yes. Small tabs on the lid can lock into slots in the side walls, like the closed kraft box in our photos.

How do I check my book tuck box before printing?

Every order gets a free proof showing the dieline and artwork. The tuck box artwork and dieline guide explains what to check.
