What are window tuck boxes?
Window tuck boxes are printed folding cartons with a die-cut opening in one or more panels. Clear film can be glued behind the opening, or you can leave it as a plain hole. Most close with a reverse tuck end, and they are delivered flat.
They suit products shown through the box. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

What are window tuck boxes?
They are printed tuck cartons with a hole cut into one or more panels. The hole is part of the cutting die, so it is made in the same step as the carton shape itself.
A window answers the question every buyer has: what does it actually look like? It shows the colour of a candle, the shape of a toy or the texture of a soap without breaking any seal.
Any closure in our tuck end box styles range can carry a window. This page covers how to place one well.
What do our three photos show?
The pink carton with a scattered heart print has a large window in its lid, framing the tray below. It is the kind of box made for Valentine's Day and other gifting dates.
The blue carton has a tall window down the front and a hang tab with a punched slot at the top. Line drawings of gadgets run round the window.
The grey carton holds a candle jar, with a window cut into the side so the wax colour shows. The lid is open and the jar sits next to it.
Where should the window go on the carton?
Start with the part of the product worth seeing. That might be a colour, a label, a shape or a texture. Then decide which panel faces the buyer when the carton is on the shelf or in a listing photo.
Front windows suit upright products on a shelf. Side windows suit products where the front carries the brand and the side can show the goods. Lid windows suit boxes that lie flat.
| Window position | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Front panel | Chargers, toys, bottles | Keep clear of the bottom crease on a reverse tuck |
| Side panel | Candles, jars, soaps | Leave room for text on the same side |
| Lid | Treats, sets, flat gifts | Lid stiffness on large windows |
| Two panels | Corners that wrap round | Keep a board strip at the corner fold |
Should my window have clear film?
Film keeps dust and fingers off the product and stops small items slipping out. It suits food, cosmetics and anything that should look untouched.
An open window, with no film, feels more natural and lets buyers touch a texture, such as a soap or a fabric. It also suits products that are already wrapped in their own sleeve or bag, since the wrapping does the job the film would do.
Both are options. The guide to windows, foil and lamination compares them with photos.
How big can a window be on a tuck box?
The panel needs a frame of board around the window to hold its shape. A common rule is a margin of 8 to 10 mm, measured from the window to the nearest fold or edge.
Larger windows are possible on smaller cartons, as long as the frame is kept. On a lid, a very large window can make it flex, so we may suggest a slightly smaller opening.
We mark the window size and position on the proof. If anything looks too close to a fold, we flag it before printing. Send the product with its label facing the way it will sit, and we can check the line-up against the real thing.
Who orders window tuck boxes?
Mostly brands where the product sells itself on sight. If a buyer would open the box in the shop just to look, a window saves them the trouble. Candle makers are a good example, and the candle boxes with a window cut-out are built around this idea.
- Candle studios showing wax colour
- Toy and gift sellers showing the figure or item
- Soap makers showing colour and texture
- Accessory brands showing a charger or cable
- Bakers and sweet makers showing treats through a lid window
Board, print and finishes around a window
We normally cut window cartons from 350gsm white SBS. A kraft carton with a window suits handmade goods, and other boards can be asked for.
Design the artwork so it frames the window, as the blue carton in our photos does with its gadget drawings. Avoid placing key text right at the window edge, where the cut may trim it.
Lamination, spot UV, foil and embossing are all available as options. Foil around a window edge looks smart but needs a few millimetres of space from the cut.
Can a window box also have a hang tab or insert?
Yes. The blue carton in our photos combines both a front window and a hang tab, which suits products sold on peg rails.
An insert helps when the product must line up with the window. A card platform or cradle holds it at the right height, so the label sits in the frame every time.
Our tuck boxes with rise-up inserts show how a platform raises a short product into view.
What are the common window mistakes?
Most are about position, and all of them show up clearly on the proof.
- A window that shows the back of the label or an empty space
- Cutting too close to a fold, so the panel bends
- Placing the barcode where the window will cut through it
- Using film on a product that should be touched
- Forgetting that a short product sinks below a high window without an insert

Window Tuck Boxes: questions
Is the window on a tuck box covered with film?
It can be. Clear film glued inside the window is an option, or the window can be left open.
What shape can a carton window be?
Almost any shape that fits the panel with a border of board around it: rectangles, circles, arches or a shape that echoes your logo.
Can a window go on the side of the carton?
Yes. A side window is common on candle boxes, like the grey carton in our photos, so the front keeps the brand.
How close can a window be to a fold?
Around 8 to 10 mm away is the usual guide. We check that gap on the proof.
Can I have two windows on one carton?
Yes. Two windows, or one that wraps round a corner, are possible as long as a strip of board is kept at the fold.
Does a window make the carton weaker?
It removes some board from that panel. Keeping a border round the window and a sensible size keeps the panel firm.
Can a window tuck box have a hang tab?
Yes. The blue carton in our photos has both a front window and a hang tab with a slot for a peg.
Will my product line up with the window?
We size the window to your product. For short items, an insert holds the product at the right height.
Is a window box good for food?
Clear film over the window keeps the contents covered. Tell us what is going inside and we suggest a layout.
Can I print around the window edge?
Yes. Leave a few millimetres between key text and the cut, so nothing important is trimmed.
Is a window tuck box more expensive?
A window and film add a little to the cost. The written quote shows the box with and without them if you ask.
Can I try my logo on a window box first?
Yes. You can place your logo on a sample carton photo using Design Your Box with your own logo, then send it with your quote.
