Retail, Game and Gadget Boxes Printed to Your Product Size

Printed retail tuck boxes for the things people pick up at a till or off a peg wall: card games, small toys, bulbs, chargers, phone cases and golf balls. Every carton is cut to your item in millimetres, proofed free and sent flat.

What sits in the retail, game and gadget range?

Six cartons for products sold in shops, at events and online: playing card boxes, toy tuck boxes, light bulb boxes, electronics tuck boxes, phone case boxes and golf ball boxes.

The buyers are just as mixed. Card game designers, toy makers, lighting brands, accessory sellers, phone shops, pro shops and gift retailers all order from this range. What they share is a product that has to sell itself from a shelf or a hook, often next to a dozen rivals.

Many of these products are small and similar to their neighbours on the wall. A clear name, a strong colour and the one detail a shopper checks, such as a plug type or a phone model, do more than decoration.

Every retail tuck box, with its usual closure

The table lists all six boxes. The closure shown is the one we usually quote, but any closure can be quoted on any box.

Phone Case BoxesStraight tuck endPhone cases and accessories
Golf Ball BoxesReverse tuck endGolf balls and sleeves

Four of the six use a reverse tuck end, the everyday carton for light retail goods. The other two are chosen for how the product is taken out.

Toy, bulb, gadget and golf cartons can all switch to a crash lock base for faster packing on larger runs.

Why do card decks use a tuck top?

A deck is drawn out from the top, card by card, and the box goes back in a pocket or a game box. A tuck top has a hinged lid with a front tuck flap, so it opens and closes many times without tearing.

Standard poker cards are about 63 × 88 mm, and a deck of 54 is roughly 18 mm thick, so a common box starts at about 65 × 20 × 90 mm inside. Tarot and oracle decks are larger and need their own size.

Thumb notches cut into the front panel make the deck easy to grip. Card game designers often add a second deck box inside a larger game carton. Our page for playing card boxes with tuck tops covers poker, bridge and tarot sizes.

Which retail boxes need a hang tab?

Any product sold from a peg wall: chargers, cables, phone cases, bulbs and small toys. The tab is a punched header above the top tuck, cut from the same sheet as the carton.

Choose a round hole for standard pegs or a slot for wide ones. Add the tab before the proof, since it changes the dieline. The electronics tuck boxes for chargers and cables page shows three cartons with tabs.

  • Round hole: suits thin wire pegs.
  • Slot or euro slot: suits wider pegs and heavier packs.
  • Printed both sides: the back of the tab is visible from the aisle.
  • Taller header: leaves room for a price sticker above the product name.

How do windows work on retail cartons?

A die-cut window lets the shopper see the actual product. It suits phone cases, filament bulbs, plush toys and golf balls, where the look of the item is part of the sale.

Use clear film when the item could fall out or gather dust. Leave the window open when the product is larger than the hole, as with a golf ball. Phone case cartons often give most of the front to the window. Our windowed phone case boxes page shows how the printed frame keeps the panel stiff.

Keep the window away from the fold lines and the glue flap. A frame of printed board at least 10 mm wide round the opening keeps the panel flat on the shelf.

Sizing retail boxes to the product

Send inside sizes in millimetres. Measure the product at its widest point, with any cap, plug pins, camera bump or tag included, then add clearance.

Rigid items such as golf balls and card decks need very little, about 1 mm all round. Softer or uneven items such as plush toys and coiled cables need 3 to 5 mm. Bulbs need room for the cap as well as the glass. See light bulb boxes sized to the bulb for a worked table.

If one carton must fit several similar products, such as cases for a few phone models, size it to the biggest item and use an insert to take up the gap for the smaller ones.

Not sure? Send a sample by post and we measure it, then return the sizes with the proof.

Inserts that keep products in place

Retail products are handled a lot before they are bought. A card insert stops the item sliding about and keeps it facing the window.

Common inserts across this range include a collar for a bulb cap, a tray for a wall plug, a backing card for a phone case and a divider for a toy kit. All are cut from board and fitted by hand. Our printed toy tuck boxes page shows a kit layout.

Inserts can be printed too. A backing card with fitting steps or a short rules summary for a card game turns a plain piece of board into something useful.

Board, print and finishes for retail packaging

Standard board is 350gsm white SBS, which prints sharp product photos and small technical type. Retail cartons can be made in kraft or other boards on request too.

Finishes are options on every box: matt, gloss or soft touch lamination; spot UV; gold, silver or holographic foil; embossing or debossing. Gloss suits toys and bright gadgets. Matt with spot UV suits accessories. Soft touch with foil suits golf gifts and premium card games.

Holographic foil is popular with card games and collectable toys, where a flash of colour helps a small box stand out on a crowded rack.

Print every panel. Retail boxes are turned in the hand, stacked sideways and photographed by customers, so the sides and top deserve as much care as the front.

Golf, events and corporate gifts

Golf ball sleeves, card decks and small gadgets are common corporate gifts. Event organisers print the event name, date and sponsor logos on the panels and order several designs at once.

Each design can share a dieline when the size is the same, which keeps the quote simple. Read about golf ball boxes for sleeves and dozens if you are planning a golf day.

Order a few extras. Late entries, guest speakers and replacement prizes always appear on the day, and spare sleeves are easier than a rush reprint.

Common mistakes with retail tuck boxes

  • Measuring a product without its plug pins, cap or camera bump.
  • Adding a hang tab or window after the proof.
  • Putting a barcode where a window or tuck flap will cut through it.
  • Running small legal text across a fold.
  • Leaving no bleed on dark artwork, so white edges show at the tucks.
  • Sizing a card box to a fresh deck, then adding sleeved cards that no longer fit.

Our designers place your artwork on the dieline for free and flag these issues on the proof.
