What are straight tuck end boxes?
Straight tuck end boxes are folding cartons where the top and bottom tuck flaps both hinge from the same panel. Each end closes towards the front, which leaves the front face uncut from edge to edge. They arrive flat, glued along one side seam, and fold up by hand.
They suit shelf cartons with a clean front. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

What is a straight tuck end box?
It is the carton you picture when someone says "a small printed box". A single sheet of board is cut, creased and glued along one side seam. Each end closes with a tuck flap and two small dust flaps.
The word straight refers to the direction of the tucks. On this style both of them are joined to the back panel, so they fold the same way. That is the difference from a reverse tuck, where one hinges from the front.
It sits alongside five other closures in our range of tuck end box styles. Any of them can be quoted on the same size.
How do the two tucks close, and why does the front stay clean?
Picture the carton standing up with the front facing you. The top flap swings forward from the back edge and its tongue slides down behind the front panel. The bottom flap does the same thing, upside down.
Because neither flap hangs from the front, that panel has no fold at the top or the bottom. Your name, a window or a photo can run right to the edges. If the box lies flat on its back in a display, both ends still look the same.
- Front panel: plain cut edges top and bottom, no crease
- Back panel: carries both tuck flaps
- Side panels: carry the four dust flaps that sit under the tucks
- Glue: one side seam, applied before the cartons are sent
Who orders straight tuck cartons?
Mostly brands whose front panel does the selling. When a buyer sees the box on a shelf or in a listing photo, the face needs to be uninterrupted.
Skincare makers use it for droppers and tubes. Card game designers use it for decks. Small accessory sellers use it for cables, chargers and phone straps. Slim cosmetics are a classic fit, as our printed lipstick boxes for UK brands show.
It also suits anyone who stands cartons in a row on a counter. Every box faces the same way, and every top looks identical.
Straight tuck or reverse tuck: which should I pick?
Both fold by hand and both arrive flat. The choice comes down to the front panel and how the cartons nest on the printed sheet.
| Point | Straight tuck end | Reverse tuck end |
|---|---|---|
| Where the tucks hinge | Both on the back panel | One on the back, one on the front |
| Front panel | No crease at either end | A crease along one end |
| Lying on its back | Both ends match | Ends look different |
| Window on the front | Easy to place full height | Needs room above the bottom crease |
| Layout on the sheet | Nests less tightly | Nests more tightly |
If the front matters most, go straight. If the box is a plain everyday carton, the reverse tuck end carton option often comes out a little cheaper on a quote.
What size straight tuck end box fits my product?
Take three measurements of the product with its cap, pump and label on: width, depth and height. Allow roughly 2 mm extra each way across the base and 3 to 5 mm above the top. That is your inside size.
Tall, narrow cartons need care. A dropper bottle that is three times taller than it is wide will tip over unless the base fits snugly.
Our guide on measuring inside sizes for a tuck box shows where each measurement starts. Not sure of a number? Post the product to us and we will size the carton around it.
Board and inside print
The usual board is 350gsm white SBS. It has a bright, smooth face that holds fine type and photos well. Brown kraft, or a different board altogether, is a request away.
Look at the cartons in our photos. The outsides are plain white, but the insides are printed in a strong blue, one with a small repeating pattern. Inside print is an option that turns the moment of opening into part of the design.
Inside print adds a second print pass, so it shows on the quote as its own line.
Which finishes work on a clean front panel?
The uncut front is the best place on the carton for a finish. Foil on a name, spot UV on a logo or an embossed emblem can sit in the middle of the panel. Nothing competes with it there.
Matt lamination keeps the white looking soft and hides fingerprints. Gloss makes printed photos look deeper. Soft touch gives a velvet feel that buyers notice when they pick the box up.
Every one of these is optional and itemised on your quote. The guide to foil, spot UV and lamination on tuck boxes explains what each one does to the board.
Do straight tuck end boxes arrive flat?
Yes. Each carton is glued along its side seam and packed flat, so a few hundred take up very little room. You pop the tube open, close the bottom tuck, drop the product in and close the top.
Most people close the bottom of a whole batch first, then fill and close the tops in a second pass. It is quicker than handling one box at a time.
If you post products to customers, the carton is the retail layer, not padding. Put it in a mailer or a padded bag for the journey.
Common mistakes with straight tuck cartons
Most of the problems we see start at the artwork stage, not the folding. These are the ones worth checking before you approve a proof.
Panel order trips up a lot of designers. Our note on how panels are ordered on a dieline is worth reading before you lay out the file.
- Putting text on the tuck tongue, where it disappears inside the carton
- Measuring the bottle without its cap or pump
- Placing a barcode across the side seam
- Leaving no bleed, so a white line shows at the fold
- Choosing a straight tuck for a heavy glass jar that would sit better on an auto bottom
How do I order straight tuck end boxes?
Every order is quoted on its own, from £0.25 per unit, and the figure is fixed in a written quote before you commit. You can send the details by email, phone or WhatsApp. A short form on this page works too.
To start, request a written straight tuck price and follow these steps.
- Send the product size in mm, or the inside size of a carton you already use.
- Give us a quantity, plus the board and any finish you fancy.
- Send a logo or finished artwork. Setting it onto the dieline costs you nothing.
- Check the free proof, panel by panel, and approve it.
- We print, cut and glue the run over 4–6 business days. Free tracked delivery then takes 2–3 business days.
Straight Tuck End Boxes: questions
Why is it called a straight tuck end?
Both tuck flaps are joined to the same panel, so they fold in the same, straight direction. On a reverse tuck they fold in opposite directions.
Does a straight tuck end box have a crease on the front?
No. The front has plain cut edges at the top and bottom, with no fold line, because both tucks belong to the back panel.
Can I print inside a straight tuck carton?
Yes, inside print is available on request. The blue insides in our photos are an example of a colour printed on the reverse of the board.
Is a straight tuck carton more expensive than a reverse tuck?
Sometimes, by a small amount. The layout nests less tightly on the printed sheet, and the written quote shows both if you ask.
Can a straight tuck end box have a window?
Yes. A die-cut window, with or without clear film, can run almost the full height of the front because there is no crease to avoid.
Which products suit a straight tuck end carton best?
Light, slim products where the front face sells: droppers, lipsticks, card decks, cables and small accessories.
Can I switch my straight tuck design to an auto bottom later?
Yes. The panels stay similar, so the artwork usually moves across with small changes to the base. We send a new proof.
Do the dust flaps get printed too?
They can be. Most people leave them plain or carry the inside colour onto them.
How tall can a straight tuck end box be?
There is no fixed limit in the style itself. Very tall, narrow cartons are sized carefully at the base so they stand without tipping.
Can you add a hang tab to a straight tuck carton?
Yes. We can extend the back panel into a tab over the top tuck. A peg hook goes through a punched hole or slot in it.
What happens if my straight tuck cartons arrive creased or misprinted?
Photograph the faults and tell us inside 10 days of the parcel arriving; we then reprint or refund. The steps are on the misprints and refunds page.
Do you keep my straight tuck dieline for repeat orders?
Yes. We keep the dieline and artwork on file, so a repeat run only needs a quick proof check.
