What are hang tab tuck boxes?

Hang tab tuck boxes are folding cartons with an extra panel rising above the top tuck. That panel carries a punched hole or slot, so the box hangs from a peg hook instead of sitting on a shelf. Most close with a straight tuck end and arrive flat.

They suit peg displays in shops. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

What is a hang tab tuck box?

It is an ordinary folding carton with one change: the back panel carries on above the lid line and gets a hole punched through it. That tab lets the box hang from a peg rather than stand on a shelf.

All three of our photos show the same idea. A white carton has a short tab with a euro slot. A kraft one has a tall tab and a big front window. A navy and orange printed box has a wide tab across its full length.

Who needs cartons that hang?

Any product sold from a pegboard, slatwall or clip strip benefits. Hanging puts the box at eye level and frees shelf space for bigger lines.

  • Phone accessory and cable sellers stocking gadget shops and petrol station counters
  • Pet shops hanging toys, leads and treat packs
  • Hardware and craft suppliers with small parts and kits
  • Beauty brands selling lip products and nail items on salon stands
  • Gift shops with keyrings, socks and small novelties

Euro slot, round hole or plain slot?

The hole shape decides which hooks the box fits. Each has its place, and the dieline can carry any of them.

The euro slot, sometimes called a sombrero, is the most common. It has a round centre with wings either side, so it sits on single prongs and wider retail hooks alike. Every photo on this page uses one.

Why does a straight tuck suit a hanging carton?

Here the lid flap and the base flap both swing in from one face of the carton. That keeps the front panel clear from top to bottom, which matters when the box faces the customer at eye level.

It also means the top tuck sits just in front of the tab, leaving the hang panel flat and upright. Our page on straight tuck end cartons for retail shows the fold order.

Heavier gadgets sometimes call for a crash lock base instead, so the bottom cannot pop open while the box hangs.

How tall should the hang tab be?

Most tabs stand 30 to 45 mm above the lid. The hole sits roughly in the middle of that height, with 8 to 10 mm of board above it so it does not tear when a shopper lifts the box off.

A taller tab gives you room to print a logo above the hole, like the white carton in our photos. A short tab keeps the box compact in an outer carton. Small items such as lip balm look odd with a huge tab, so scale it to the box.

For a sturdier tab, the panel can be doubled over and glued, giving two layers of board where the hook takes the load.

Can a hang tab box have a window?

Yes, and it is a strong pairing for products people want to see before buying. The kraft sample in our photos has a large window cut in the front panel, with board left around every edge.

Keep a margin of 10 mm or more from every crease to the edge of the cut-out. Less than that and the front panel can bow as the box hangs.

You can leave the window open or back it with clear film, which keeps dust off items such as cables and earrings.

How do I size a carton for a pegboard?

Measure the product first, then think about the rail. Allow 2 to 3 mm clearance on the length and width of the item and 3 to 5 mm on its height.

Then check the gap between hooks in the shop. If pegs are 100 mm apart and your box is 110 mm wide, the cartons will overlap. Ask the stockist for their peg spacing if you can. Depth matters too: a slim carton lets more units hang on one peg, which shops like. The item side is covered in our guide on measuring for a tuck box.

Printing the front, back and tab

Every panel prints in full colour, tab included. Use the front for the product name and a clear picture, the back for details and the barcode.

The tab is often forgotten. A small logo or a price sticker area there helps when cartons hang several deep and only the top shows. On a busy peg rail, that strip of print is sometimes the only part a shopper sees from the aisle.

Matt or gloss lamination helps the tab resist creasing from repeated handling. Spot UV and foil are available as options on any panel.

How do hang tab cartons pack for delivery to a shop?

The tab adds height, so a hanging carton takes more room in an outer box than a plain one. Pack filled cartons upright in rows with the tabs all facing the same way, and they nest neatly with little wasted space.

If a stockist wants cartons ready to hang, lay a sheet of card over the tabs before closing the outer. That stops the top layer pressing creases into the punched panels.

Your blank cartons reach you flat with the holes already punched, so there is nothing to cut or drill at the packing bench.

Common hang tab mistakes

  • Placing the hole off centre, so the box tilts on the hook
  • Printing text or a barcode where the hole will be punched
  • Making the tab too short to leave board above the hole
  • Forgetting the peg spacing in the shop when choosing the width
  • Using a single layer tab for a dense item such as a box of metal fixings

We check hole position and tab height on the dieline before you see the proof, so most of these are caught early.

How do I order hang tab tuck boxes?

A hang tab run is quoted in writing, from £0.25 per unit. You can request a hang tab carton price and follow these steps:

  1. Give us the item size and the tab height you prefer.
  2. Choose the hole: euro slot, round, plain slot or double.
  3. Add a window, lamination or any other finish.
  4. Share your artwork, and our designers position it around the punched tab for free.
  5. Check the free proof, paying attention to the hole position.
  6. Your approval starts the clock on a 4–6 business day run.
  7. Delivery is free and tracked, reaching UK addresses in 2–3 business days.

Hang Tab Tuck Boxes: questions

What is a euro slot on a hang tab box?

It is a punched hole with a round centre and two wings, shaped a little like a hat. It fits single prong hooks and most shop pegs.

Can the hang tab be folded down when the box sits on a shelf?

Yes, if we score a fold line at the base of the tab. Ask for it if the same carton will hang in one shop and stand in another.

Is a double thickness hang tab available?

Yes. The tab can be folded over and glued to give two layers of board around the hole. It is quoted as an option.

Can I have a hang tab on a kraft carton?

Yes. Hang tabs can be cut from kraft or white board, as the kraft sample in our photos shows.

Will the hanging hole tear when customers pull the box off?

Leaving 8 to 10 mm of board above the hole helps prevent tearing. A double layer tab gives extra support.

Can a hang tab box close with a crash lock bottom?

Yes. Any closure can be quoted, and a crash lock base suits denser items on a hook.

Can the hang tab be printed on both sides?

Yes. The front of the tab usually carries the logo, and the reverse can carry a short message or price area.

How wide can the hang tab be?

It can run the full length of the carton, as on the navy sample, or be a narrower panel in the centre.

Do hang tab cartons arrive flat?

Yes. They come glued on the side seam and flat, with the tab already punched.

Can I add a thumb notch as well as a hang tab?

Yes. A thumb notch on the front tuck makes opening easier and sits below the tab.

Can I see the hole position before the run?

Yes. The free proof shows the dieline with the hole marked, and the press waits for your sign-off.

Which other tuck boxes can carry a hang tab?

Most of them, from cosmetics to small gadgets. Browse the retail, game and gadget box range for shapes that often hang.
