What are candle tuck boxes?

Candle tuck boxes are printed folding cartons sized to one container candle. The usual build is a tuck end auto bottom: the crash lock base is pre-glued and forms itself, and the top closes with a tuck flap. They arrive flat, with the side seam and base already glued.

They suit jar, glass and tin candles. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

What is a candle tuck box?

It is a printed carton that holds one container candle and stands upright on a shelf. Most candle boxes are close to a cube, because candle jars are roughly as wide as they are tall.

Our sample photos show the range. There is a cream cube with an inner top card and a thumb notch, white cartons beside white jars, a terracotta box, a navy box with gold foil and a blush carton beside two tins.

Each one was cut to its own jar, which is why no two are quite the same shape.

Who uses candle tuck boxes?

Candle makers in the UK range from kitchen-table studios to shops with their own pouring room. Most of them reach the same point: the jar looks good, but it needs a box to be sold as a gift.

Whatever the size of the studio, the box has to match the jar label so the two read as one product.

  • Home candle studios selling at markets and online
  • Interior and gift shops with their own candle line
  • Salons and spas selling a signature scent at reception
  • Wedding and event planners giving a boxed candle as a favour
  • Brands launching a seasonal scent for Mother's Day or Valentine's Day

Why does a candle box usually have an auto bottom?

A glass jar is heavy for its size, and candle makers pack a lot of boxes in one sitting. A crash lock base answers both points.

The base flaps are pre-glued, so when you push the flat carton open, the base locks into place by itself. You drop the jar in and tuck the top.

It is quicker than folding a tuck at each end, and the jar sits on a full double layer of board. Our tuck end auto bottom boxes page shows the base folding step by step.

What size box fits a 20cl candle jar?

A common 20cl straight-sided candle jar is about 80 mm across and 90 mm tall with its lid. Add about 3 mm to the width and 5 mm to the height, giving a box near 85 × 85 × 95 mm.

Measure with the lid fitted if you sell the candle lidded. A wooden or metal lid often adds 5 to 10 mm.

The table shows other starting points. Jars from different suppliers vary, so we always work from your own measurements.

Do candle boxes need an insert?

A well-sized box holds a jar still on a shelf. If the candles travel in the post, a card collar around the jar or a card that sits over the top stops it lifting.

The cream sample in our photos uses a top card with a half-moon cut-out. It covers the wax, holds the jar down and gives you a spot for a scent name or burning notes.

Inserts arrive flat and fold in seconds, so they do not slow down packing.

For tins, a card tray with two round recesses stops a stacked pair from sliding apart.

How should a candle box be printed?

Candle boxes are printed on 350gsm white SBS unless you ask for kraft or another board. Candle labels are often minimal, and the box can follow the same rule: one colour, lots of space and a clear scent name.

The navy sample shows what foil adds: a gold name, a small illustration and the scent at the foot. Embossing or debossing gives the logo a feel without ink.

Matt or soft touch lamination suits candle boxes better than gloss, which shows fingerprints. Our finishes guide for tuck boxes compares each one.

What should go on the panels of a candle box?

Use the front for your name and the scent. Use one side panel for the product details you already put on your label, and the back for your story or social handle.

Keep small type off the top flap, where the fold and the thumb notch can cut through it. The base is a good spot for a batch code sticker.

If you sell through shops, leave room for a barcode on the back or base. Most stockists ask for one before taking a new line.

How do candle boxes pack and post?

Flat cartons store in a fraction of the space of made-up boxes. Push them open at the bench as you need them.

For posting, put the boxed candle in a mailer with paper or card around it. Square candle boxes fit tightly in rows inside a shipper, which stops them sliding.

Flat cartons travel well to a market in a crate. Fold a few dozen on the morning of the fair and keep the rest flat as spares.

Can I use one candle box for several scents?

Most candle makers sell several scents in the same jar. One printed box with a scent sticker on the front is the simplest way to cover them all.

If you want each scent printed, we can quote a set of designs on one order. The dieline stays the same, so only the artwork changes.

A colour band per scent, such as green for fig or blue for sea salt, helps shoppers find their favourite on a shelf.

Common candle box mistakes

  • Measuring the jar without its lid
  • Choosing gloss lamination on a pale box that gets handled at markets
  • Putting a long scent description on the narrow side panel in tiny type
  • Skipping a collar or top card for candles that are posted
  • Ordering one box for two jar sizes, so the smaller jar rattles

Candle Tuck Boxes: questions

Why do most candle boxes use a crash lock base?

The base forms itself when you push the carton open, which makes packing fast. The jar then sits on a double layer of board.

Can a candle box fit a jar with a wooden lid?

Yes. Measure the jar with the lid on and we add clearance to that height. Wooden lids often add 5 to 10 mm.

Can I fit two candle tins in one tuck box?

Yes. Two stacked tins fit a taller square carton. A card divider between them stops the tins scratching each other.

What is the top card in a candle box for?

It sits over the jar, covers the wax and holds the candle down. It can also carry the scent name or care notes.

Can candle boxes have a thumb notch on the top flap?

Yes, a half-moon thumb notch is a common option. It helps the customer lift the tuck flap without tearing it.

Is a navy or black candle box possible with gold foil?

Yes. Dark full-colour print with gold, silver or holographic foil on the name is a popular choice for candle gift boxes.

Will a candle box fit both a 20cl and a 30cl jar?

Not well. The jars differ in width and height, so the smaller one would move. We quote one box per jar size.

Can the candle box match my existing jar label?

Yes. Send your label artwork and our designers use the same colours, fonts and layout on the carton.

Do candle boxes come with a window?

These boxes are fully printed as standard. If you want the candle to show, see our candle boxes with a window instead.

Where do I put the safety text on a candle box?

Most makers put it on one side panel or the back. The proof shows exactly where it sits before anything is printed.

Can I order kraft candle boxes?

Yes, kraft board is available on request. It suits a one or two colour print with a natural look.

Are candle tuck boxes glued when they arrive?

Yes. The side seam and the crash lock base are pre-glued, and the box is delivered flat.
