What are incense boxes?

Incense boxes are slim printed cartons sized to a bundle of incense sticks, or compact cartons for cones. The usual closure is a straight tuck end, where both end flaps tuck in from the same side. They arrive flat and glued along the side seam.

They suit incense sticks, cones and holders. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

What are incense boxes like?

Incense sticks are long and thin, so the box is too. Most stick boxes are six or seven times longer than they are wide, with a tuck flap at one end.

Our four sample photos show this. One is a teal carton standing open with sticks poking out of the top. Another is green with an orange inner card holding sticks and a holder tile. A third pair is terracotta with embossed shapes, and the last is white with a large logo.

Each opens in its own way, but all of them keep the sticks lying flat and straight.

Who uses printed incense boxes?

Shops also like a box that stands on its end without tipping, so a slightly wider base helps.

  • Small UK incense makers rolling or dipping their own sticks
  • Yoga studios and wellbeing shops with a house scent
  • Gift shops selling incense with a matching holder
  • Home fragrance brands adding incense beside candles and melts
  • Retailers repacking bulk sticks under their own name

Most buyers want a box that slips into a bag without bending and looks tidy on a narrow shelf.

How long should an incense box be?

Measure your longest stick end to end. Add about 10 mm, so the tips are not crushed when the flap tucks in.

Common stick lengths are around 230 mm and 280 mm. Cones are far smaller and go in a compact square carton instead.

Width and depth depend on how many sticks you pack. Bundle them, hold them together with a band, then measure across the bundle.

Hand-rolled sticks can vary by a few millimetres. Measure the longest from several bundles.

Why use a straight tuck end for incense?

With a straight tuck end, both flaps tuck in from the same side. The long front panel stays unbroken, which suits a tall vertical name like the teal sample.

The customer opens one end and draws out a stick at a time. The flap tucks back in, so the rest stay fresh in the box.

If you want a different opening, any closure can be quoted. The straight tuck end boxes page shows the standard build.

A thumb notch on the end flap makes the box easier to open without bending the sticks inside.

Can an incense box hold a holder as well?

Yes. The green sample shows how: a card insert sits inside the carton, with a recess at one end for a small holder tile and a channel for the sticks.

Send us the holder size with the stick length. We size the box around both and draw the insert on the proof.

A brass or ceramic holder adds width, so the box is a little wider than a sticks-only carton.

For a ceramic holder, a recess with a little spare room stops it chipping against the sticks.

What board and finishes suit incense boxes?

Incense cartons use 350gsm white SBS as standard, and kraft and other boards are available on request. Incense packaging often uses earthy colours, and kraft or a warm print suits that.

The terracotta samples use embossed shapes on the front, which give texture without ink. Gold or silver foil on a small logo, like the teal sample, works well on a slim panel.

Matt or soft touch lamination helps keep the box clean when it is handled in a shop.

Sticks shed a little dust, so a white inside can show marks. A darker inside print hides them.

How should I lay out artwork on a slim incense box?

Long, narrow panels read best with text running up the length, as on the teal and white samples. Put the scent name on the front and the burning notes on one side.

Keep text at least 3 mm from every fold. On a 20 mm side panel, that leaves only a thin strip, so use short lines.

Our guide to tuck box artwork and panel order explains which panel faces the customer.

A short word on the top flap, such as the scent, helps when boxes stand in a tray.

Can I sell incense cones in a tuck box?

Yes. Cones are short, so the box is small and nearly square. Most cone boxes hold them standing on their bases in rows.

A card insert with small holes keeps each cone upright and stops the tips breaking. Without one, cones knock together and crumble on the way.

Cone boxes can share the print of your stick boxes, so the two sit together on a shelf as one range. Send the cone height, base width and how many you pack.

Cone boxes are short enough to stand on a counter beside a burner without tipping over.

How do incense boxes pack and post?

Slim cartons fit through a letterbox when packed in a large letter mailer. Sticks are fragile, so pack the box so it cannot bend.

For shops, incense boxes stand upright in a counter tray or lie flat in rows. They arrive flat and fold in a few seconds each.

If you supply shops, group boxes in tens with a paper band. It keeps the counts easy to check.

What goes wrong with incense boxes?

Most problems come down to measuring the bundle wrongly.

  • Measuring a single stick rather than the full bundle, so the box will not close
  • Forgetting the bare stick ends, which can run past the coated part
  • Printing long notes on a side panel only 15 to 20 mm wide
  • Ordering a box so loose that sticks snap when it bends
  • Leaving no room for a holder you later decide to include

Incense Boxes: questions

How much longer than the sticks should an incense box be?

About 10 mm longer than your longest stick. That keeps the tips clear of the tuck flap.

Can I fit incense cones in a stick box?

Cones usually go in a small square carton instead. Send the cone size and count and we size it for you.

Can an incense box include a holder?

Yes. A card insert with a recess holds a small holder tile beside the sticks. Send the holder size with your request.

Which end of an incense box opens?

Either end can open. Most makers open from the top so sticks slide out one at a time.

Can incense boxes be embossed?

Yes. Embossing or debossing gives a raised or pressed pattern without ink, as on the terracotta samples.

Will incense scent soak into the box?

Some scent may come through uncoated board. Laminated board keeps the outside cleaner.

What is the most common incense stick length?

Many sticks are around 230 mm or 280 mm long, but they vary by maker. Always measure your own.

Can I print the burning instructions on the side?

Yes. Side panels on incense boxes are narrow, so keep the lines short and leave 3 mm from each fold.

Can incense boxes be made in kraft?

Yes, kraft board is available on request in place of 350gsm white SBS.

Do incense boxes need a thumb notch?

It is optional. A thumb notch on the end flap helps the customer open a slim box without tearing it.

Can incense boxes stand on a shop counter?

Yes. Upright in a tray or a display tuck box for counters, they show the scent name at eye level.

How soon will my incense boxes arrive?

Making takes 4–6 business days after proof approval. Free tracked UK delivery takes 2–3 business days after that.
