What are mug boxes?

Mug boxes are square printed cartons sized to one mug, handle included. The base uses four flaps that lock together in a set order, known as a 1-2-3 or snap lock bottom, and the top closes with a tuck flap. They arrive flat and glued along one side seam.

They suit printed mugs, cups and gift mugs. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

What makes a mug box different from a plain carton?

A mug is round, heavy for its size and has a handle sticking out of one side. A carton cut to the body alone will not close, and one cut too loose lets the mug knock about.

So a mug box is usually longer than it is wide, with the extra length taken up by the handle. The base matters more than the lid, because the weight sits on it every time someone lifts the box.

Who orders printed mug boxes?

Most of our mug boxes go to small UK businesses that print or sell mugs themselves. A few are cafés and venues that sell a branded mug at the till.

What they share is a mug that weighs more than most small retail goods, and a buyer who expects a box when the mug is a gift.

  • Sublimation studios printing photo mugs and name mugs to order
  • Potters and ceramic makers boxing hand-thrown cups for craft fairs
  • Coffee roasters selling a mug and a bag of beans as one gift
  • Gift shops building a Mother's Day or birthday range
  • Event and wedding planners giving guests a printed mug to take home

How does the 1-2-3 snap lock base close?

The base has four flaps. You fold the first side flap in, then the second, then push the two long flaps down so their tabs hook together. That is the one, two, three.

Once locked, the base is a full panel of board with no gap in the middle. It does not need tape or glue, and it opens flat again if you need to repack.

The top closes with a plain tuck flap, so the customer opens it from above and lifts the mug out by the handle. Other bases, including a crash lock, are explained in our guide to tuck end box styles.

What size box fits a standard 330 ml mug?

A typical straight-sided 330 ml mug is about 82 mm across the body and 95 mm tall. The handle adds about 33 mm on one side.

Measure across the widest point from the back of the body to the outside of the handle. Then add 2 to 3 mm to each inside measurement so the mug slides in without forcing the panels.

The table gives starting points. Your own mug may differ by several millimetres, so we work from your measurements or a sample.

Should a mug box have a window?

A window helps when the mug itself is the design, such as a patterned or photo mug. In our sample photos, one orange carton has a tall window on the front and a yellow one has a square window on the side.

Keep the window at least 10 mm away from every fold and from the base. That leaves enough board around it for the panel to stay square.

A plain opening is fine for ceramic. Clear film over the window keeps dust off a mug that sits on a shop shelf for weeks.

Board, print and finishes

Mug boxes are made in 350gsm white SBS as standard, with kraft and other boards on request. White board gives the brightest colour for an all-over pattern like the orange sample.

Print runs across every outside panel, so a repeat pattern can wrap the whole carton. Matt, gloss or soft touch lamination, spot UV and gold, silver or holographic foil are all options.

If you also sell cups for takeaway drinks or tumblers, a matching set of cartons is easy to quote side by side. Our food and drink tuck box range shows the other shapes.

Dark all-over prints show scuffs on the corners more than pale ones. Matt lamination hides light marks on a box handled at a market stall.

Do I need an insert inside a mug box?

For a box that only sits on a shelf, a well-sized carton is enough. For mugs that travel in the post, a card insert stops the mug turning and keeps the handle off the side panel.

A simple insert is a strip of card with a slot for the handle. It costs little extra and sits flat until folded.

How should I post mugs in these boxes?

The mug box is a retail carton, not a shipping box. For posting, put each carton inside a padded mailer or a corrugated outer with wrap around it.

Because the cartons arrive flat, you can store several hundred in a small cupboard and fold them as orders come in. Fold the base first, drop the mug in by its handle, then tuck the lid.

If you sell on marketplaces, photograph the folded box beside the mug, as in our samples. Buyers then see that the mug arrives ready to give.

Can one box hold a mug and a small gift?

Many sellers pair a mug with coffee, hot chocolate sachets or a bag of sweets. A slightly taller carton leaves room above the mug, or a card shelf holds the extras at one side.

Tell us exactly what goes in and how each part is wrapped. We size the box around the whole bundle and show the layout on the proof.

Mug bundles sell well before Mother's Day and Father's Day, so order the cartons a few weeks ahead of the date.

What goes wrong with mug boxes?

Most problems come from measuring the body and forgetting the handle. The second most common is ordering a window so large that the front panel bows.

  • Measuring the mug without its handle, so the box will not close
  • Placing a window across a fold line
  • Printing important text on the base flaps, where it gets split by the folds
  • Skipping the insert for mugs that will be posted

Mug Boxes: questions

Why are mug boxes longer than they are wide?

The extra length makes room for the handle. A box sized to the round body alone would not close over a mug with a handle.

Does a 1-2-3 bottom need tape to stay shut?

No. The four base flaps lock together when folded in order, so the base stays closed without tape or glue.

Can a mug box take a photo mug made by sublimation?

Yes. Send the blank mug size and we cut the box to it. Many sublimation sellers add a front window so the printed photo shows.

Can I order one mug box size for two mug shapes?

Only if the two mugs are within a few millimetres of each other. Otherwise the smaller mug moves about, so we usually quote two sizes.

Where should the window go on a mug box?

Usually on the front panel, facing away from the handle. It can also go on a side panel if the mug design sits there.

Can the inside of a mug box be printed?

Yes, inside printing is available on request. It suits a short message or pattern that shows when the lid is lifted.

Will a mug box fit an espresso cup and saucer?

A cup and saucer need a wider, flatter carton than a mug. Send both sizes and we work out a box with a card insert to separate them.

Is kraft board available for mug boxes?

Yes, kraft is available on request instead of the standard 350gsm white SBS. It prints well with dark inks.

Can I get a sample mug box before ordering a full run?

Ask when you request your quote. We send a free proof of the artwork on the dieline before anything is printed.

Can mug boxes come with a handle on top for carrying?

Our mug boxes close with a tuck flap and do not have a carry handle. A thumb notch on the lid can be added on request.

How long do mug boxes take to arrive?

Your boxes are made in 4–6 business days once the proof is signed off. Delivery is free and tracked to UK addresses in 2–3 business days, as set out on our UK delivery information page.

Can you match a mug box to a set of two mugs?

Yes. A wider carton with a card divider keeps two mugs apart. Send the size of each mug and we draw the box around both.
