What are tumbler boxes?

Tumbler boxes are slim printed cartons sized to one tumbler or drink bottle. They usually close with a reverse tuck end, where the top flap tucks in from the back and the bottom flap from the front. They are delivered flat and glued along the side seam.

They suit tumblers, flasks and drink bottles. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

What are tumbler boxes used for?

A tumbler box gives a drinkware product a printed home of its own. It turns a steel cup into something that can be gifted, sold on a shelf or photographed for a listing.

Our sample photos show both formats. Two are long cartons with a steel bottle lying inside and the lid opening along the length. Two are upright kraft cartons, one with a plain front and one with a tartan print and a shaped window.

A plain steel tumbler looks like dozens of others in a listing photo. A printed box is often the only thing that shows whose product it is.

Who buys printed tumbler boxes?

Tumbler boxes suit anyone selling drinkware under their own name. The same carton style works for a single seller and for a team ordering branded gifts.

Each group wants something slightly different. Engravers want one box that fits many orders, while gift buyers want a strong opening moment.

  • Engraving and laser studios personalising steel tumblers
  • Online shops selling insulated cups and travel flasks
  • Gyms and clubs ordering branded bottles for members
  • Companies giving a boxed bottle as a staff or client gift
  • Wedding planners boxing named tumblers for the bridal party

Upright or lying down: which tumbler box shape is best?

Upright cartons suit wide tumblers with lids and straws. They stand on a shelf like a jar box and show a tall front panel for your branding.

Long cartons suit slim bottles. The bottle lies on its side, the lid opens along the top, and the inside of the lid becomes a second print area, as in the purple and red samples.

If you are unsure, think about where the box will be seen. Shelves favour upright boxes. Gift tables and unboxing videos favour the long ones.

How does the reverse tuck close a tumbler box?

On a reverse tuck end carton, the top flap tucks in from the back and the bottom flap tucks in from the front. Each end has two dust flaps folded under the tuck.

This keeps the print on the front panel clean, as no flap edge crosses it. For a heavier tumbler with a handle, we can quote a crash lock base instead, which forms itself when the carton is pushed open. Our reverse tuck end boxes page shows the standard layout.

What size box fits a 590 ml tumbler?

A typical 590 ml insulated tumbler is about 90 mm across the rim and about 200 mm tall with its lid on. A straw adds height, so most sellers pack it separately alongside.

Allow roughly 3 mm extra across and 5 mm extra in height. That gives a box near 95 × 95 × 205 mm.

Tumblers taper, so measure the widest point, which is usually the lid. Send us a sample or the maker's drawing if you have one.

Can a tumbler box have a window?

Yes. The tartan sample has a window with stepped corners on the front, so the white tumbler shows through. A matching window on the side lets light in from two angles.

Keep at least 10 mm of board between the window and each fold. Film over the window is optional and keeps dust off a steel finish.

A window works best with a plain or engraved tumbler. A busy tumbler print can clash with a busy box print.

Tell us which side of the tumbler carries its logo, so the window can line up with it.

Which board and finishes suit drinkware boxes?

We print on 350gsm white SBS as standard, with kraft and other boards on request. Kraft suits a simple one-colour logo, like the brown upright samples.

Matt, gloss or soft touch lamination, spot UV, and gold, silver or holographic foil are available. Foil on a dark outer, with a printed kraft-look inside lid, gives a strong opening moment.

For a matching card insert to hold the bottle in place, ask on the same quote.

A card insert also keeps the steel from rubbing the inside of a pale box on the way to the customer.

How do I post a boxed tumbler?

Steel tumblers are tough, but the carton corners can still get crushed in transit. Put each boxed tumbler in a padded mailer or a small corrugated outer.

The long format packs well in rows, so a gift order of ten fits neatly into one outer. Upright boxes stack two layers high in a carton without leaning.

Slim bottle boxes also fit long, narrow mailers. Check the outside size of the folded box before you buy your mailers.

Can a tumbler box work for personalised orders?

Engraving shops often add a name to each tumbler. The box can stay the same on every order, with a clear panel left for a name sticker.

If every box needs its own printed name, ask us first, because that is a different kind of job. Most sellers find one printed design plus a sticker is quicker at the bench.

For wedding tumblers, a front window lets the engraved name show without opening the box.

Common tumbler box mistakes

Most mistakes come from measuring without the lid fitted. Others come from choosing a format before thinking about where the box is seen.

  • Measuring the cup body but not the lid or handle
  • Squeezing a straw in alongside the tumbler, which pushes the tuck open
  • Placing a window where the tumbler's own logo does not line up
  • Choosing a long box for a tumbler that will stand on a shelf

Tumbler Boxes: questions

Do tumbler boxes come in a lying-down format for bottles?

Yes. Slim steel bottles usually go in a long carton that opens along its length. Wide tumblers usually stand upright.

Can a tumbler box fit the straw as well?

It can if we size for it. Tell us the straw length and whether it goes inside the tumbler or alongside, and we adjust the inside size.

Can you print the inside lid of a long tumbler box?

Yes, inside printing is available on request. It suits a logo, a short message or care notes.

What closure do tumbler boxes use as standard?

Reverse tuck end, with the top tucking from the back and the bottom from the front. A crash lock base or any other closure can be quoted instead.

How do I measure a tapered tumbler for a box?

Measure the widest point, usually the lid or rim, and the full height with the lid on. Add around 3 mm to that width and 5 mm to the height.

Can a tumbler box take a tumbler with a handle?

Yes. We size the box across the handle. These boxes are wider at the front than a plain tumbler box.

Is a window possible on a kraft tumbler box?

Yes. Kraft board takes die-cut windows the same way as white board, with or without film.

Can engraving shops order one box for several tumbler sizes?

Only if the sizes are close. Otherwise smaller tumblers move about, so it is better to quote one box per size.

Can I add a card insert to hold the bottle still?

Yes. A card insert with a cradle or collar holds the bottle in place. Add it to your quote request.

Will tumbler boxes stack on a shop shelf?

Upright tumbler boxes stack well when the sizes are matched. Long boxes are better laid flat in a row.

How quickly can I get tumbler boxes?

Production starts after the proof is approved and takes 4–6 business days. After that, delivery to any UK address is free, tracked and takes 2–3 business days.

What if my tumbler boxes arrive damaged?

Send photos within 10 days of delivery and we reprint or refund the affected cartons. Our misprints and refunds policy has the details.
