What are kraft tuck boxes?

Kraft tuck boxes are folding cartons made from brown kraft board instead of white board. The unbleached surface shows through the print, so dark inks and foil read best. They arrive flat and close with a reverse tuck end as standard.

They suit natural, brown board look. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

Who buys kraft tuck boxes?

Kraft board is the brown, unbleached card you see on handmade goods and small-batch food. It gives a carton a warm, honest look before a single drop of ink goes on.

The buyers who ask for it tend to sell things made in small runs, where a glossy white box would feel out of place.

  • Coffee roasters and tea blenders packing pouches and tins
  • Soap makers wrapping bars in a printed brown carton
  • Craft beer and spirits shops boxing gift glasses
  • Stationery and print studios selling cards and stamps
  • Market traders who want plain boxes with a stamped or labelled logo

How does kraft compare with white SBS board?

Our standard board is 350gsm white SBS, which has a bright, smooth face. Kraft is offered on request instead. The two behave differently under ink, so it helps to see them side by side before you pick.

What prints well on kraft board?

Kraft has no white base, so every ink sits on brown. Black, deep navy, forest green and burgundy stay crisp. Yellows, pinks and light greys almost disappear.

The second photo shows the right approach: dark lettering across the front, a block of small text down the side and a barcode on a solid patch. The orange inside panel is printed too, which is available on request.

Line drawings, stamps and one or two flat colours usually look better on kraft than full photographs. Think of old shop labels and printed seed packets: bold type, simple shapes and plenty of bare board between them.

Why is a reverse tuck the usual closure on kraft cartons?

On a reverse tuck end, the lid flap goes in behind and the base flap goes in at the front. It is the everyday closure for light retail cartons and folds quickly at a packing bench.

The plain cartons in our first photo show the shape well: long tuck flaps, small dust flaps either side, and a glued seam down one edge. You can see a tall box, a short one and a flat one, all built the same way.

For tins and jars that are packed in quantity, the auto bottom carton with a crash lock base saves folding the bottom by hand.

Can a kraft box be left completely plain?

Yes. Plenty of buyers order unprinted kraft cartons and finish them with a sticker, a rubber stamp or a printed band. This works well if you sell many flavours or scents in the same size box.

A plain carton can still have a thumb notch, a window or a hang tab cut into it. The dark cube in our photos has a neat half-moon notch on the top tuck so a finger can lift it.

If you change labels often, plain kraft keeps one carton size working for the whole range.

What size kraft carton do I need?

Start with the item, not the box. Measure its width, depth and height in millimetres with any lid or seal fitted. A ruler is fine for a soap bar; for jars and tins, digital callipers give a truer reading of the widest point.

Add a small clearance: about 2 mm each way on the footprint and 4 mm on the height is typical for a tin or jar. Pouches need a little more width because they bulge when filled.

Send the numbers, or the item itself, and we confirm the inside size on the dieline before anything is printed.

Which finishes work on brown board?

Foil stands out on kraft more than on any other board. Gold and copper look warm against the brown; silver looks sharper and more modern.

Embossing and debossing suit kraft because the texture is part of the look. A debossed logo with no ink is a quiet, tactile choice.

Matt lamination keeps the paper feel while protecting the surface. Gloss tends to fight the plain character of the board, so most buyers skip it.

Can kraft cartons have windows, inserts or hang tabs?

Yes, all of them work on brown board. A window lets a buyer see coffee beans, loose leaf tea or the colour of a soap without opening the box. Keep it on the front panel and leave at least 10 mm of board around it so the panel stays stiff.

A card insert can hold a jar upright or keep two items apart in one carton. For shops with peg rails, a hang tab carton for peg displays can be cut from kraft just as easily as from white board.

Each extra is drawn on the dieline, so you see exactly where it falls before approving.

How do kraft cartons arrive and pack?

Expect bundles of flat cartons, each with its long seam already glued. Squeeze the edges and a blank springs open into a tube, ready for its two tucks.

Filled cartons stack tidily into a shipping outer. For coffee and tea, pack them upright so the pouches do not slump against the tuck flaps.

Stored flat in a dry room, unused cartons stay square and ready for your next batch. Damp is the enemy of any board, and kraft shows water marks more than a laminated white carton does.

What mistakes do people make with kraft artwork?

Nearly every problem with kraft comes from designing on a white screen. Artwork that looks balanced on a monitor can turn muddy on brown board. Watch for these:

  • Pale or pastel colours that vanish into the board
  • Photographs, which lose contrast and look dull on brown
  • Very fine reversed-out text, which fills in on the fibre
  • Barcodes printed on a light tint instead of a solid dark patch
  • Expecting the brown to match exactly between batches, when kraft varies slightly in shade

Kraft Tuck Boxes: questions

Can white ink be used on kraft tuck boxes?

Ask us when you request a price and we will tell you what is possible for your design. Most kraft orders are printed in dark inks, foil or both.

Will my brand colours look the same on kraft as on white board?

No. Colours print darker and warmer on brown. If an exact colour matters, white SBS is the safer board.

Can I order plain kraft boxes with no printing?

Yes. Plain kraft cartons are made to your size and can be labelled or stamped by you later.

Is the inside of a kraft box brown too?

Yes, the board is brown on both faces. Inside print is available on request if you want a colour or message there.

Does foil work on kraft board?

Yes, foil reads very clearly on brown. Gold, silver and holographic are all available as options.

Can kraft tuck boxes have a window?

Yes. We can cut an open window, or one backed with clear film, wherever it suits the design. Coffee, tea and soap cartons often use one.

Is kraft good for a coffee bag carton?

It is a popular choice. Measure the filled bag, as pouches bulge, and allow a little extra width.

Does the shade of kraft change between orders?

Kraft board can vary slightly in tone from batch to batch. Designs with dark ink hide this better than large unprinted areas.

Can a kraft carton have a thumb notch on the tuck?

Yes. A half-moon notch on the top flap is a common request and is drawn on the dieline at proof stage.

Can I mix kraft and white boxes in one order?

Yes. Each board is quoted as its own line, so a range can use both.

Will embossing show on brown board?

Yes. Embossed and debossed logos show well on kraft because the raised or pressed area catches the light.
