What are soap tuck boxes?

Soap tuck boxes are shallow printed cartons for bar soap, shaped like a small brick. A reverse tuck end is the norm here. Its ends close on opposite faces and the bar loads through the narrow end. They are cut to your bar with a couple of millimetres to spare on each side.

They suit bar soaps. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

Who uses tuck boxes for soap?

Bar soap is one of the oldest boxed products on a shop shelf, and the tuck box is still the standard pack for it. It is cheap to cut, stacks neatly and gives you six printed faces.

We make them mostly for small makers who have outgrown paper wraps and labels.

A tuck box also folds flat after use, which makes it easy for a customer to keep for drawers or as a gift box.

  • Cold process soap makers selling at markets and online
  • Skincare brands adding a bar alongside creams and serums
  • Gift shops boxing soap with a card or a dish
  • Hotels and guest houses who want a branded guest bar
  • Wedding and event planners making favour boxes

If guest bars are your main use, our printed boxes for hotel amenities cover the smaller sizes and room sets.

How does the reverse tuck closure work on a soap box?

On a soap box the opening sits on the short end. One end flap tucks towards the front and the other towards the back, so the two closures face opposite ways.

That keeps the long front panel and the top face clear of flaps, which is where your name and window go.

The bar slides in lengthways, and you close the second end. Because a bar is flat and firm, it does not need a crash-lock base. Hand tucking is quick on a carton this small.

What size box fits a 100 g bar of soap?

A typical 100 g rectangular bar measures about 88 × 58 × 28 mm. A box with an inside size of 90 × 60 × 30 mm slides over it without forcing.

Hand-cut bars are never quite the same size. Measure five or six bars from one batch and use the largest, or the box will be tight on some of them.

Soap also shrinks a little as it dries. Measure bars that have finished curing, not fresh ones from the mould.

Our notes on measuring inside sizes and clearance cover this in more detail.

Should a soap box have a window?

The sample in our photo is a white and orange carton with a small round window on the top face. That lets a buyer see the bar's colour without opening the box.

A soap window works open, or with a clear film panel behind it. Open windows also let the scent through, which many makers like for a market stall.

Hold the soap window back from the creases and leave 10 mm or more to each edge, so the carton stays square. Shaped windows, such as a leaf or a bee, are cut with the same die.

We explain sizing and film choices on our window tuck boxes page.

Which board and finish suit soap packaging?

White SBS at 350gsm is the board we run by default. Kraft and other boards are quoted when you ask for them.

White gives bright, clean colour, which suits fresh scents and pastel ranges. Kraft suits an earthy, hand-made range and takes black or white ink well.

Soap boxes get handled a lot in shops. A matt lamination protects the print from scuffs. Gloss suits strong colours. Soft touch feels pleasant, though it shows oily fingerprints more than matt does.

How do soap box styles compare?

StyleHow the bar goes inBest for
Reverse tuck endSlides in through the short endMost single bars
Straight tuck endSame, but both ends close towards the backBoxes with a clean, unbroken front
Tuck topDropped in from above under a hinged lidTwin packs and gift sets
Window cartonEither of the tuck ends, with a die-cut faceColoured or patterned bars

We can price any of these closures on a soap carton, so choose the one that fits your packing routine. A straight tuck end carton is worth a look if both ends will show on display.

What text goes on a soap carton?

Put the product name and scent on the largest face. The ingredient list, weight and your contact details usually fit on the back.

Use the two short ends for the scent name in larger letters. When bars stand in a basket end on, that is the only part a buyer sees.

Keep small print at least 3 mm away from folds and cut edges. Fine serif type can fill in on uncoated kraft, so choose a slightly bolder face there. Our proof shows each panel in place, so you can check nothing runs over a crease.

How do soap boxes arrive, and how do you fill them?

The cartons come flat, glued along one seam. Open the tube, tuck one end, slide the bar in and tuck the other end.

Many makers wrap the bar in tissue or a paper band before boxing it. That keeps any oil on the bar away from the printed board.

For posting, stack boxed bars on their sides in a small shipper. Count 4–6 business days to print bar soap cartons once the proof is approved. Tracked, free UK delivery of the flat soap boxes adds 2–3 business days.

Can soap boxes work as gifts and favours?

Yes, and a lot of our soap orders are for exactly that. A small bar in a printed box makes a neat wedding favour, a thank-you for a client or a small birthday gift.

For favours, a guest-size bar of about 40 g keeps the box small and the cost down. Many couples print names and a date on the front and leave the back plain.

For gift sets, two or three bars can share one deeper carton. A card divider keeps the scents apart, and a window on the lid shows the colours side by side.

If you need one box design with a different name on each run, tell us early. Each printed version is quoted as separate artwork.

Which mistakes do soap makers make with boxes?

  • Sizing the box to one bar when the batch varies by several millimetres
  • Measuring before the bars have cured
  • Putting a window across a fold, so the face bows
  • Choosing soft touch for an oily bar without a wrap
  • Leaving no space on the back for weight and ingredients

Soap Tuck Boxes: questions

Can one soap box size fit all my bars?

Only if your bars are close in size. A box that fits your biggest bar will feel loose on a small one, so many makers order two sizes.

Can soap boxes have a round window?

Yes. Round, oval and shaped windows are all cut as options, open or with clear film. Tell us where you want it and we place it on the proof.

Do I need film over the window on a soap box?

No. Many makers leave it open so the scent reaches the buyer. Film keeps dust off the bar and gives the window a finished edge.

Will an oily soap bar mark the box?

It can, on uncoated board. Wrap the bar in paper or tissue first, or choose a laminated board that resists marks.

Can I order soap boxes in several scent colours?

Yes. Each colour is its own artwork, quoted together in one order. Keeping the layout the same across scents makes a tidy shelf.

Can a soap box hold two bars?

Yes. We cut a deeper carton for a twin pack, often as a tuck top so both bars drop in from above. Send the size of both bars stacked.

Is kraft board a good choice for handmade soap?

Kraft suits a natural, hand-made look and prints well in one or two dark colours. Bright colours look stronger on white board.

Can the soap box be printed on the inside?

Yes, inside printing is an option. A pattern or a short message on the inside of the flaps is a common choice.

Can a soap carton hang on a peg hook?

Yes. A hang tab can be cut above one end so the box hangs on a peg hook. Tell us on your quote request.

What size are hotel soap boxes?

Guest bars are usually 15 to 40 g, so the boxes are much smaller than retail ones. Send us your bar size and we cut the carton to it.

How fast can I get soap boxes?

A soap run needs 4–6 business days in print after the proof is signed. Free tracked post to UK addresses then needs 2–3 business days.

What if my soap boxes arrive damaged?

Send photos within 10 days of delivery. We reprint or refund under our misprints and refunds policy.
