What are candle boxes with window?
Candle boxes with a window are printed cartons for one container candle, with a die-cut opening on one or more panels. The window can be left open or covered with clear film. Most use a crash lock base and a tuck top, and they arrive flat and glued.
They suit candles shown through a window. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

Why choose a candle box with a window?
A window lets the buyer see the jar, the wax colour and the wick before they open the box. That matters when the glass is part of the design, such as amber, smoked or coloured jars.
Our two sample photos show the idea. One is a black carton with a gold foil frame on the front and a tall window on the side, showing an amber jar. The other is a plain kraft cube with a large window on the front.
A window also saves printing a picture of the jar on the box, because the real thing is on show.
Who buys windowed candle boxes?
A window on a fully printed box gives you both: brand on the front, glass on the side.
- Candle makers who pour into coloured or patterned glass
- Shops selling candles on open shelves, where buyers like to see the product
- Makers with a decorated jar or a hand-painted label
- Gift sellers pairing a candle with dried flowers on top of the wax
If your jar is plain and the label carries the brand, a fully printed box may suit you better.
Where should the window go on a candle box?
Front windows show the jar head-on and suit a plain carton like the kraft sample. Side windows leave the front for printing, as on the black sample, and let the jar show from a second angle.
Two windows on adjoining panels let light pass through the box, so the jar glows on a shelf. Keep the corner between them solid, or the box loses its shape.
Line the window up with the part of the jar you want seen. Usually that is the label or the coloured glass, not the empty space above the wax.
| Window position | What it shows | Works well for |
|---|---|---|
| Front panel | The jar face-on, label centred | Plain or kraft cartons |
| One side panel | The jar from the side | Printed fronts with foil |
| Front and side | The jar from two angles | Coloured or amber glass |
| Small top window | The wax surface and wick | Decorated wax tops |
Should the window have clear film?
An open window is simplest and shows the glass with no reflection. It suits candles sold quickly at markets and online.
Clear film over the window keeps dust off the wax and stops shoppers touching the wick. It suits candles that sit on a shop shelf for weeks.
Both options are made with a die-cut opening. The film is fixed on the inside, so the outside print stays clean.
If you post most of your candles, film also stops packing paper catching on the window edge.
How big can the window be?
Keep at least 10 mm of board around every window, measured from each fold and from the base. A bigger margin keeps the panel flat.
As a rough rule, a window can take up about half of a panel without weakening the box. Our window tuck boxes page has more layouts and shapes.
Rounded, arched and stepped corners all cut cleanly. Very thin strips between two windows tend to tear and are best avoided.
If you cannot decide, ask for two window sizes on the proof. Seeing both on the dieline makes the choice easier.
What size candle box with a window do I need?
Measure the jar at its widest point and its full height with any lid. Add about 3 mm to the width and 5 mm to the height.
A snug fit matters more with a window, because a loose jar slides away from the opening. If you sell lidded and unlidded versions, size the box for the lidded one and add a card collar.
Send a photo of the jar beside a ruler if you are unsure. It helps us set the window at the right height.
Board and finishes for windowed candle boxes
The standard board is 350gsm white SBS, with kraft and other boards on request. Black or dark print with foil, as in the sample, makes the lit glass stand out.
Gold, silver or holographic foil framing the window draws the eye to it. Matt or soft touch lamination keeps the dark panels from showing fingerprints.
Spot UV, embossing and debossing are options too, and each one is priced in the quote.
A kraft box with a simple black print, like our second sample, lets the glass do the talking.
Can a window show the top of the candle?
Some makers decorate the wax surface with dried petals or a pressed pattern. A small window in the top flap shows it without opening the box.
Keep a top window well inside the edges of the tuck flap. A window too close to the hinge weakens the flap and makes it harder to close.
Film is worth adding on a top window, as dust settles on wax quickly.
How do I pack windowed candle boxes for posting?
A window is a weak spot in transit, so pack each boxed candle with the window facing inwards in the shipper. A sheet of card across the window stops wrap pressing into it.
The crash lock base forms itself when you push the carton open, so packing stays quick even with film windows.
Film windows can scratch when boxes rub together, so lay a sheet of paper between layers in the shipper.
What goes wrong with candle window boxes?
Most of these come from measuring in a hurry. The proof is where we catch them.
- A window set above the wax line, showing only empty glass
- Too little board between the window and a fold
- A loose box, so the jar slides away from the opening
- Small text printed right up to the window edge, where the cut can clip it
- An open window on candles that will sit on a dusty shelf

Candle Boxes with Window: questions
Can the window on a candle box be on the side instead of the front?
Yes. A side window leaves the front free for your brand and foil. The window can go on any panel.
Does a candle box window need clear film?
No. Film is optional. It keeps dust off the wax and stops fingers reaching the wick on a shop shelf.
How much board should be left around a candle box window?
At least 10 mm from every fold and from the base. That keeps the panel flat and the box square.
Can I have two windows on one candle box?
Yes, on adjoining panels, as long as the corner between them stays solid. It lets light pass through the jar.
What window shapes can be cut on candle boxes?
Rectangles, arches, ovals, circles and stepped corners all cut cleanly. Very thin strips between openings should be avoided.
Will an amber jar show well through a candle box window?
Yes. Amber and coloured glass look strong through a window, especially in a dark printed box.
Can a kraft candle box have a window?
Yes. Kraft takes a die-cut window the same way as white board, open or with film.
Does the window line up with my jar label?
We place the window from your jar measurements and label position. The free proof shows the window before printing.
Can I put foil around the window on a candle box?
Yes. A foil frame around the window is a popular option and draws the eye to the jar.
Is a candle box with a window weaker than a plain one?
Slightly, so we keep a board margin around the window and use a crash lock base. Pack windowed boxes with the window facing in when posting.
Can I get one windowed box for several candle sizes?
It is better to quote one box per jar size. A loose jar slides away from the window and the effect is lost.
How do I check the window before my order is printed?
You get a free proof showing the window shape and position on the dieline. Our tuck box artwork and dielines guide explains how to read it.
