What are toy tuck boxes?
Toy tuck boxes are printed folding cartons for small toys, plush, figures and craft kits. They are usually made as reverse tuck end cartons, with the top flap tucking in from the back and the bottom flap from the front. They are delivered flat and fold up by hand.
They suit small toys, plush and craft kits. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

Who orders toy tuck boxes?
Toy makers, gift shops and party suppliers who sell small items one at a time. Think mini plush, collectable figures, puzzle cubes, slime pots, bath toys and craft kits.
Our photos show the usual look: upright square cartons with bold illustrations on every side and a printed oval on the top panel. A plain carton disappears on a toy shelf, so the print does most of the selling.
How does a reverse tuck close a toy box?
The top flap tucks in from the back panel and the bottom flap tucks in from the front. Because the two tucks sit on opposite faces, the carton folds flat cleanly and squares up when opened.
This closure is cheap to make and quick to pack by hand, which suits toys sold in mixed batches. You can read more about how reverse tuck end boxes fold before you choose.
Packing a large run of kits? Ask for a crash lock base on the quote instead. The base forms itself when the carton is pushed open, so only the top needs tucking.
What size box fits a mini plush or figure?
Measure the toy at its widest points, including ears, tails and any card tag. Plush squashes, so most brands take the relaxed size and add 3 to 5 mm on each side.
Hard figures need less room, about 2 mm all round, or a card insert to stop them sliding about. The table gives common starting sizes, not fixed stock sizes.
| Toy | Starting inside size | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Mini plush | about 70 × 70 × 90 mm | Add room for a sewn label |
| Standing figure | about 60 × 45 × 130 mm | Insert keeps it upright |
| Puzzle cube | about 60 × 60 × 60 mm | Square box, 1 mm clearance |
| Craft kit | about 120 × 50 × 160 mm | Size around the biggest part |
Not sure? Post us a sample toy and we measure it, then send the sizes back with the proof.
Printing artwork on every panel
Toy cartons are seen from all angles in a shop and in an unboxing video. Our sample boxes carry a bus, a boot and a hat that run across two faces, so the artwork turns the corner without a seam.
To make that work, the print runs into the glue flap and the tuck flaps by a few millimetres. Our designers place your artwork on the dieline for free, and the guide to tuck box dielines and panel order explains the layout.
Keep one side panel clear for the age warning, barcode and the markings your toy needs. Small type near a fold line is hard to read, so give it a flat panel.
Which board and finishes suit toy packaging?
We print on 350gsm white SBS as standard, a smooth white board that keeps bright colours clean. For a natural brown look, ask about kraft or another board.
- Gloss lamination makes saturated reds and pinks look deeper and wipes clean in a shop.
- Matt lamination calms a busy illustration and takes a spot UV logo well.
- Holographic foil suits collectables and blind-box style toys.
- Embossing raises a character's outline so small fingers can feel it.
All finishes are options, quoted per order. Mix them where the artwork allows.
Should a toy box have a window?
A window lets parents see the actual toy, which helps with plush where the fabric and face matter. It can be a plain rectangle or cut to follow the artwork, such as the glass of a printed bus.
Film over the window keeps dust and small hands out. If the toy has loose parts, use film or skip the window. Our page on window tuck boxes with clear film shows the options.
Can a toy box hold kit parts in place?
Yes. A card insert with die-cut pockets holds a figure upright or keeps craft parts apart. For a single small toy, a rise-up insert lifts it towards the window so it is not lost at the bottom.
See tuck boxes with rise-up inserts for how the platform folds. Send us the parts list and we suggest a layout on the proof.
Hanging toy boxes on peg hooks
Toy shops and garden centres often hang small boxes on pegs at eye level. A punched header tab rises above the top of the carton, and the hole takes a standard peg.
The tab is part of the same sheet of board, so there is nothing to glue on. Tell us early if you need one, because it changes the dieline and the top tuck.
Print the tab on both faces. Shoppers see the back of it from the next aisle, and a blank strip of white board looks unfinished next to a printed carton.
Packing and posting your toy boxes
Your cartons come flat, glued along the side seam and banded in stacks. Each one opens into shape with a push on two corners, then you tuck the bottom, drop the toy in and tuck the top.
If you sell online, the folded toy box goes inside a plain posting carton. Leave a little space around it so the printed corners do not scuff in transit.
We make them in 4–6 business days once you approve the proof. Delivery is free and tracked to any UK address, arriving in 2–3 business days.
Mistakes to avoid on a first toy box order
- Measuring plush squashed flat, then finding it bulges the panels once packed.
- Putting the age warning across a fold, where it creases and becomes hard to read.
- Choosing an open window for a toy with tiny loose parts.
- Forgetting the hang tab until after the proof, which means a new dieline.
- Using dark artwork on the tuck flaps with no bleed, which shows white edges.
How do I order toy tuck boxes?
- Send the toy's size in millimetres, or post us a sample.
- Tell us the quantity, the closure and any window, insert or hang tab.
- We reply with a written quote, from £0.25 per unit depending on size and finish.
- Approve the free proof showing your artwork on the dieline.
- We print and cut, then deliver free with tracking across the UK.

Toy Tuck Boxes: questions
Which closure do you use for toy tuck boxes?
Usually a reverse tuck end, with the top tucking in from the back and the bottom from the front. A crash lock base or a straight tuck can be quoted instead.
Can a toy box be printed on all four sides and the top?
Yes. The artwork can cover every outside panel, including the top and bottom tucks, so a character can wrap around the corners.
How much room should I leave around a plush toy?
Most brands add 3 to 5 mm on each side of the relaxed size. Plush that is squeezed in pushes the panels out and looks swollen on a shelf.
Can the window on a toy box follow the shape of the artwork?
Yes. The window can be cut as a circle, a star or the outline of something in your illustration, with or without clear film.
Can you add an insert to stand a figure upright?
Yes. A card insert with a die-cut slot can hold a figure or keep kit parts apart. We show the insert on the proof before printing.
Where should the age warning go on a toy carton?
On a flat side or back panel, away from fold lines. Our designers check that small print does not cross a crease.
Do toy tuck boxes come assembled?
No. They arrive flat and glued on the side seam, which saves space. Each one folds into shape by hand in a few seconds.
Can I order toy boxes in several designs at once?
Yes. Several designs in one size can share one order. Tell us how many of each and we quote them together in writing.
Is gloss or matt better for a children's toy box?
Gloss makes bright colours look richer and wipes clean. Matt suits softer illustrations and works well with a spot UV highlight.
Can a toy box hang on a peg hook?
Yes. A punched header tab can be added at the top of the carton. It is cut from the same board, so nothing is glued on.
Can you make a cube-shaped box for a puzzle or novelty toy?
Yes. Square boxes are cut to your size like any other. A cube with equal sides is common for puzzle toys and mini plush.
How do I get a price for toy tuck boxes?
Send the toy size, quantity and any extras. You get a written quote, and production starts only after you approve the free proof.
