What are dropper bottle boxes?

Dropper bottle boxes are narrow folding cartons made for glass bottles with a pipette and rubber bulb. The box is sized to the full height of the bottle with the dropper in place. Most shut with a reverse tuck and are shipped to you unfolded.

They suit serums, oils and droppers. The cartons arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench.

Who orders dropper bottle cartons?

Pipette bottles turn up in far more product lines than face serums. Anything measured out in drops tends to come in one, and most of those products sell better with a printed carton around them.

The two samples in our photos show the range of looks. One is a pale carton with soft blush waves at the base, standing beside a clear bottle. The other is crisp white with black hexagon shapes, next to an amber bottle.

  • Skincare brands with face oils and serums
  • Hair and beard oil makers
  • Aromatherapy studios selling blends and essential oils
  • Nail care brands with cuticle oil
  • Herbal and botanical makers selling drop-dosed liquids

Why does the pipette change the box size?

A dropper bottle is really two parts: the glass and the pipette cap with its rubber bulb. The cap can add 25 to 35 mm to the height, and the bulb is soft.

If the carton is cut to the glass alone, the lid will not close. If it is cut tight to the bulb, every press on the top tuck squeezes the bulb. Over time that can draw air or liquid up the pipette.

So we size the inside height to the bottle with the dropper fitted, then add about 5 mm. That small gap is the most important number on the dieline.

How big is a carton for a 30 ml pipette bottle?

A standard 30 ml Boston round with a dropper is about 32 mm across and around 100 mm tall. Allow 3 mm on the width and depth and 5 mm on the height, and you get a carton about 35 × 35 × 105 mm inside.

Bottles from different suppliers vary, especially in shoulder shape and cap height, so treat this as a starting point. Send us a bottle or the supplier's drawing and we size to that.

The table gives the usual figures for the four common sizes.

Reverse tuck or straight tuck for a dropper carton?

Our usual choice is a reverse tuck end. Its lid flap enters behind and its base flap enters in front, so the face panel keeps a clean top edge and the carton is quick to close by hand.

A straight tuck end, with both flaps on the same side, gives a slightly neater look from the back. Some brands prefer it for a premium line. We can price both for your bottle so you can compare.

If you pack dropper bottles in large batches, a crash lock base saves time because the bottom forms itself.

How do you stop a dropper bottle moving inside the box?

A tall, narrow bottle in a tall, narrow box is fairly stable, but round glass can still roll a little in a square carton. A card insert solves it.

A collar insert has a round hole that grips the neck of the bottle below the cap. A platform insert lifts a short bottle so its label lines up with a window or so it sits higher in a box shared across two sizes.

Both are quoted as options. Our page on tuck boxes with rise-up card inserts shows inserts that lift the product as the lid opens.

Should a dropper box have a window?

It depends on the bottle. Clear glass with a coloured oil looks good through a slim window down the front panel. Amber and cobalt glass look dark through a window and gain little from one.

If you add a window, keep it narrow and leave board either side for strength. A tall carton with a wide window can twist when it is picked up.

A good compromise is a slim slot that shows the colour of the liquid at the shoulder of the bottle, with the label and logo printed around it. Film behind the slot keeps fingers and dust off the glass.

Board, print and finishes for droppers

We print dropper cartons on 350gsm white SBS, a smooth board that holds a tall shape and takes fine print well. Kraft and other boards are there on request.

Minimal designs like the two in our photos rely on clean white space and one strong graphic. Soft touch lamination suits that look, giving a smooth, matt skin. A small foil logo near the top of the front adds a touch of shine without clutter.

Keep ingredient lists and directions in plain ink on a side panel. Foil and embossing are for names and marks, not for small type.

Packing glass dropper bottles for posting

The carton holds the bottle upright and protects the label, but it is not padding. For orders posted direct to customers, place the boxed bottle in a mailer with a little paper or a fitted insert.

Stand the boxes upright in the shipper if you can. Lying flat, a dropper bulb takes more pressure from the cartons above it.

Flat cartons store easily, so keep a stock folded only as you need them. A bundle of a few hundred tall droppers takes up less room than a shoebox.

What are the usual mistakes with dropper box artwork?

  • Measuring the glass without the dropper cap, so the lid will not close
  • Leaving no headroom, so the tuck presses on the bulb
  • Placing the logo low on a tall box, where shelf edges hide it
  • Using one carton for two bottle shapes that differ by more than a few millimetres
  • Printing tiny directions in a pale colour that is hard to read

Each of these is easy to fix at proof stage, which is why we check the dieline against your bottle size first.

How do I order dropper bottle boxes?

Pricing for dropper cartons begins at £0.25 per unit and comes as a written quote. To get started, price your dropper bottle cartons and work through this list.

  1. Send the bottle size with the dropper fitted, or post a sample.
  2. Pick a closure, board and any insert or window.
  3. Add finishes such as soft touch, foil or embossing if you want them.
  4. Upload your artwork; the design team lines it up on the tall panels at no charge.
  5. Check the free proof, especially the headroom above the bulb.
  6. Approve it to start a 4–6 business day production run.
  7. Receive the flat cartons by free tracked UK delivery, 2–3 business days from dispatch.

Dropper Bottle Boxes: questions

How much headroom should a dropper bottle box have?

About 5 mm above the top of the bulb. That stops the top tuck pressing on the dropper.

Can one dropper carton fit both a 30 ml and a 50 ml bottle?

Not well. The 50 ml bottle is usually wider and taller, so the 30 ml would slide around. A platform insert can help if you must share one size.

Can you make a box for a 5 ml dropper sample?

Yes. Send the vial or bottle size and we draw a carton to suit it.

Is a neck collar insert available for dropper cartons?

Yes. A card collar that grips the bottle below the cap is available on request and quoted as an option.

Do amber dropper bottles need a different box?

The box is sized the same way. Amber glass looks dark through a window, so most amber bottles go in a carton without one.

Can I print directions on the inside of a dropper box?

You can. We print the inner faces when asked, which leaves the outside free for the brand and the name.

What closure is most common on dropper bottle cartons?

A reverse tuck end. A straight tuck or crash lock base can be quoted on any size.

Can dropper bottle boxes have a hang tab?

They can. Extending the back panel into a punched tab with a euro slot lets them hang on salon and pharmacy pegs.

Will a tall dropper box fall over on a shelf?

A well sized carton with a firm base stands steadily. A platform insert also lowers the bottle's centre of gravity.

Can I use the same artwork for 10 ml and 30 ml cartons?

Yes. We scale the layout to each dieline and show both on the proof.

Do dropper bottle boxes come ready glued?

Each one has its long seam glued at our end. You open the flat blank, drop in the bottle and tuck both ends.

Where can I compare dropper boxes with other beauty cartons?

Our health and beauty tuck box range lists cartons for sprays, lipsticks, soaps and more.
